Based on a true American Story, the newly released trailer for Killers of the Flower Moon teases more of seminal director Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Western crime epic. Released courtesy of Apple TV, Killers of the Flower Moon will explore the real-life murders which took place in the Osage Nation in the 1920s after oil was discovered on tribal land. Check out the new trailer for Killers of the Flower Moon below.

“At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight,” reads the official synopsis. “The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal.”

Directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Scorsese and Eric Roth, and based on the non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, Breaking Bad star and Academy Award nominee Jesse Plemons will lead Killers of the Flower Moon as old-style lawman Tom White, with Leonardo DiCaprio set to play a man named Ernest Burkhart. Hollywood icon Robert De Niro meanwhile will portray Burkhart’s uncle, the American cattleman and convicted murderer William Hale. The rest of the hugely impressive cast includes recent Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, Lily Gladstone, Tantoo Cardinal, Jack White, and John Lithgow.

While wider audiences await the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, the movie has been seen by a lucky few, debuting at the 76th Cannes Film Festival back in May. And the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with Killers of the Flower Moon now sitting at a near-perfect score of 97% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praised Killers of the Flower Moon for echoing modern era politics and earning its lengthy runtime saying, “The three-and-a-half-hour running time is fully justified in an escalating tragedy that never loosens its grip — a sordid illustration of historical erasure with echoes in today’s bitterly divisive political gamesmanship.”

Rolling Stone’s David Fear calls Killers of the Flower Moon “[A picture] brimming with reverence for a culture that survived a horrible trauma as it is filled with exhilarating flourishes, film history references, and explorations of the faultline between the sacred and profane. And yes: It’s a masterpiece,” while Variety’s Peter Debruge adds, “In its present form, “Killers” is still a compelling true story… It’s engrossing from the get-go, the palpable tension methodically echoed by Robbie Robertson’s steady-heartbeat score. But it keeps going and going.”

Lastly, indieWire’s David Ehrlich heaps praise on Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance, calling it “The best performance of Leonardo DiCaprio’s entire career… His nuanced and uncompromising turn as the cretinous Ernest Burkhart mines new wonders from the actor’s long-standing lack of vanity.”

Killers of the Flower Moon is scheduled to be released in select theaters on October 6, before a wider release on October 20, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. The thriller when then land on Apple TV+ at a later date.
