Bird Box Barcelona Is Just the Beginning of the Horror Franchise

Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, the first Bird Box introduces audiences to a world where a strange force that cannot be looked upon has destroyed the population. Led by Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes, Bird Box was met with mixed reviews, but proved to be a major hit with audiences, even becoming the most-watched movie on Netflix within 28 days of release.

Thus, a new horror franchise was born, with Bird Box Barcelona just the first project being planned by Netflix to tell a tale alongside the Sandra Bullock-led story. Bird Box Barcelona has since been described as “the first of multiple local-language Bird Box spinoffs,” with producer Chris Morgan teasing the plans for the Bird Box franchise calling the first movie “just the first chapter of this global, apocalyptic event. As we were developing the original film, we often discussed what would be happening at the same time in different countries around the world.”

“The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey,” fellow producer Dylan Clark adds. “Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges.”

Bird Box Barcelona is scheduled to debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023.
