Amazon is one of the largest companies in the world. Thus, it’s dipped its toe into several different industries over the years. While it exited the smartphone business several years ago, it might have another smartphone venture up its sleeves. According to a report from Bloomberg (via The Verge), Amazon may be in talks to offer phone service for its users.
This report sits on pretty shaky ground, so you might not want to hold your breath for it. Bloomberg was able to gather this information from people familiar with the matter. However, pretty much all of the companies involved are denying this report.
Amazon spokesperson Bradley Mattinger stated that “We are always exploring adding even more benefits for Prime members, but don’t have plans to add wireless at this time.” Amazon isn’t the only company denying this. The reports state that Amazon has been in talks with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and even Dish about setting up Wireless plans for users. All four of the companies also denied the reports…
So, either the people close to the matter are pulling our legs, or Amazon vehemently does not want people to know about its plans. In any case, you will want to take this news with a grain of salt.
Amazon may offer phone service in the future
According to the report, Amazon could possibly offer wireless phone service to Amazon Prime users. This could either be a free expansion to their plan or an additional $10. Since the report says that Amazon is only in talks with these companies, there’s nothing solid to go on.
What we can expect is for Amazon to offer its Wireless plan to several phones that it sells on the platform. Instead of activating it through any of the major carriers, you may be able to purchase your phone and activate it then and there. That’s only speculation, however.
We don’t expect to hear any details about this phone plan anytime soon (if it does come out, let’s just hope Amazon calls it Fire Wireless). For all we know, it could be trashed before it even gets down on paper. Only time will tell.
