WhatsApp is spotted testing Material You toggles in its Android app. The new design is still under development and is not even available to beta testers.
Rivalry with Telegram caused WhatsApp to change its approach and focus on releasing more features to catch up with the competition. The Meta-owned messaging app has released some great updates since then. However, the design of WhatsApp has remained unchanged for an extended period of time. The app is now about to get a makeover with Material You toggles.
The WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is working on a redesign for app switches with Material Design 3 guidelines in mind. The makeover is seen in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.12.3 and might come to the stable version with a future update.
WhatsApp might get Material You toggles in the next update
The app was already spotted working on a bottom navigation bar and a redesigned group chat settings page, but the latest design tweak focuses on bringing a new switch UI. More makeovers might be in the plan for the rest of the year.
The new toggles give a fresh and modern look to the app. Given that WhatsApp doesn’t change its interface on a continuous basis, the new toggles are a great addition to keep the app updated with the latest design trends.
As you can see in the screenshot, the app now has more harmony with the overall Android theme and Material Design 3. The toggles also appear to be intuitive, which allows users to switch toggles with a tap. The toggles also go gray when turned off and green when turned on.
Unlike previous features, the new switch UI is not yet rolled out to beta testers. But testers can take their hands on it in the future app update.
Such changes will help WhatsApp to catch up with the competition and prevent users from migrating to rival platforms. The new toggles might be the first step for WhatsApp toward a complete makeover.
