On Android, if you want to check your weather, you’ll need to go through the Google app. It’s pretty easy to do so if you have the At A Glance widget, but those without the Pixel launcher are out of luck. However, according to a new report, Google is working on bringing a standalone weather app to Android.

This is good news for people who like to keep up with the weather. There’s already a standalone weather app on WearOS, and that brings a certain set of features. Bringing one to Android is a welcomed move.

Google is working on bringing a stand-alone weather app

It seems likely that Google will unveil this app, however, you will still want to take this with a grain of salt. This was discovered through an APK deep-dive performed by 9To5Google (via Android Police). As such, this is not user-facing, and Google has not officially announced it. Google can take it away at a moment’s notice.

9To5Google found hints of this in version 7.5 of the Google Clock app. It seems strange that this code lives within this app. However, presumably, the Clock app will be updated to show you your local weather along with the time. The standalone weather app might provide the local weather to the Clock app.

Assets found in the clock app include Blizzard, Clear Day, Cloudy, Drizzle, Flurries, Low visibility, Heavy Rain, Nighttime Scattered thunderstorms, Rain with Sleet or Hail, Tropical Storm or Hurricane, and Very Hot. So, we can expect the weather app in the clock app to integrate seamlessly.

We’re not 100% sure when this new app will roll out, but it is expected to launch before the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet officially launch. So, it shouldn’t be too much longer. When the app does launch, we can expect it to have all of the usual material you visual cues.
