The first trailer for the Bird Box spinoff, Bird Box Barcelona, promises to take audiences back to the post-apocalyptic horror that tormented Sandra Bullock back in 2018. Released courtesy of Netflix, on which Bird Box Barcelona will debut later this year, the teaser offers our first look at the Bird Box-based movie in what has been called “the first of multiple local-language Bird Box spinoffs” all of which will be set in the same universe. Check out the trailer for Bird Box Barcelona below.

“After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population by causing all who see it to take their lives, Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona,” the official synopsis for Bird Box Barcelona reads. “But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.”

The First Bird Box Was a Major Hit for Netflix

Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, the first Bird Box introduces audiences to a world where a mysterious force has decimated the population. While almost nothing is known about this “force,” it does come with a very simply set of rules – if you see it, you die. Led by Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes, Bird Box follows Malorie as she attempts to survive and search out hope and a new beginning. Protecting her children from whatever it is that’s out there, Malorie must journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they’ll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike, Bird Box was a major hit for Netflix upon release. Proving to be hugely popular with viewers, Bird Box took the title of the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of release (a title it has since lost to the action movie Red Notice) and was watched by almost 26 million viewers in its first week in the United States.

Only time will tell whether audiences wish to once again strap on a blindfold and stumble around the world of Bird Box, but clearly the streaming giant has big plans for the franchise.

Bird Box Barcelona is now scheduled to debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023.
