Another leak has added weight to recent leaks and rumors that Samsung‘s upcoming clamshell foldable Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature an unusual folder-shaped cover display. Noted tipster Ice Universe shared a photo of a transparent protective case for the new foldable earlier today, showing a large cutout on the top half. The share of the cutout matches the screen design shown by leaked CAD renders a few days back.
Galaxy Z Flip 5’s unusual cover display is a huge upgrade
Samsung is giving its Flip series clamshell foldables a much-needed functional upgrade this year. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a significantly larger cover display that’s a lot more usable than the past solutions. We are talking about a 3.4-inch panel versus a tiny 1.9-inch screen. You can use most apps on the new foldable without unfolding it. Taking selfies with the rear cameras would also be a lot easier.
But to fit two cameras on the back, Samsung had to cut a notch on the cover display. The notch gives the screen a folder-like look, something not everyone has shown much liking for. To that end, the company will probably slap a black panel on the top rear half of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to hide the display when it’s not lit up. It did the same in the past as well, despite equipping the foldables with a much smaller cover display.
We often tend to grow a liking for things after seeing them up close rather than in photos and videos. So the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s folder-shaped cover display may not feel that bad when holding the foldable in your hands. Thankfully, we may not have to wait as long as before to hold it. Rumors are that Samsung is planning to launch its 2023 foldables about 2-3 weeks earlier than usual, i.e. in late July.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be accompanied by the Galaxy Z Fold 5 out of Samsung’s doors. The Fold model isn’t getting any such design or functional overhaul for the cover display. However, both foldables will feature a new type of hinge this year. The so-called waterdrop hinge allows the devices to fold shut, leaving no gap between the two halves when folded. This makes the devices thinner and lighter. The new hinge also reportedly reduces the display crease. We will have to wait and see if Samsung manages to completely remove the crease this year.
