Unidentified Objects is a surreal comedy-drama that asked the question everyone has been asking for decades – what would happen if an uptight gay dwarf and an alien-obsessed sex worker took off on a road trip like no other from New York to Canada to find their place in the universe? This is the unlikely premise of Juan Felipe Zuleta’s feature directorial debut, which has been taking film festivals by storm since last year, and with a release set for June, the first trailer gives a look at what to expect from this quirky Indie movie which stars Matthew Jeffers and Sarah Hay as its leads.
Unidentified Objects is not your average alien abduction movie, nor is it a generic road trip movie, as can be seen from the synopsis which reads:
“Peter is a misanthropic dwarf hiding from the world in his shabby New York City apartment. But an unexpected visit from his upbeat—and possibly unhinged—neighbor Winona forces him out of his shell and onto an impromptu road trip. Their destination? What she believes to be the site of an upcoming alien visitation in the wilderness of rural Canada. On their increasingly surreal odyssey, Peter and Winona will encounter bickering lesbian cosplayers, shroom-addled survivalists, and even extraterrestrial highway cops. But the further they go and the more their trauma comes to light, it becomes clear that the only thing more nerve-wracking than being abducted is being alone in the universe.Visually stunning and wickedly humorous, this unpredictable rollercoaster ride will keep you captivated until the very end. It may even leave you questioning your own sense of reality.”
Unidentified Objects Is Another Movie That Doesn’t Need A Mega Budget To Succeed
Since the Covid pandemic some of best received movies across all genres have been independent movies that don’t have the backing or budgets associated with big studios. That hasn’t stopped them making a mark on cinemas in their own way, and it looks like Unidentified Objects is set to be another hidden gem just waiting to be uncovered.
The movie is currently sitting on a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, with the critics who have seen the movie unanimous in their opinion that the film is an amazing blend of science fiction, fantasy, love story and comedy, which is led by stand-out performances from Hay and Jeffers. Having received its premiere back in September 2022 at Fantastic Fest, the film has yet to be seen by a larger audience but from reactions so far it certainly seems to have warranted a general release to allow it to tell its tale to a wider audience.
Matthew Jeffers has previously appeared in The Black List, New Amsterdam and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and also acts as producer on Unidentified Objects. Sarah Hay’s list of appearances includes Black Swan, Flesh and Bone, The Mortuary Collection and HBO’s Room 104. She joins Jeffers as producer on the movie. Juan Felipe Zuleta is best known for his directorial work on short films and music videos, with Unidentified Objects being his first foray into the world of feature films.
