Thanks to the overwhelming critical, commercial, streaming, and awards season success of the incredible RRR, international audiences have had their eyes opened to Indian cinema in a major way. While it was destined to succeed on its own merits, the knock-on effect may have played a part in Pathaan reaching the very summit of the streaming charts.
Per FlixPatrol, the record-breaking blockbuster is standing tall as the number one most-watched movie on the Prime Video worldwide rankings, and the 146-minute epic delivers no shortage of bang for its buck. Shah Rukh Khan plays the title role in what marked his first major leading role in half a decade, and his resurgent comeback couldn’t have gone any better.
Not only is Pathaan the highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 after notching upwards of $130 million at the global box office, but it’s also the second top-earning Hindi feature ever made, the fifth-biggest release in the history of Indian cinema, in addition to ending up as the biggest Hindi hit both overseas and in the United States, to name but a small few of its major milestones.
The narrative hardly breaks the mold, with Khan’s title hero finding out about an impending attack on his country by a ruthless band of mercenaries, but it’s all about the execution. Packed with wall-to-wall action sequences and plenty of style to spare, Pathaan has continued its incredible run by taking pride of place at the top of the most-watched list on one of the biggest streaming platforms there is.
