Rumors are that Samsung will increase the RAM and storage of its flagship smartphones with the Galaxy S24 series next year. At the same time, it is also no longer planning to exclusively use Snapdragon processors and switch back to Exynos, at least in some markets. Turns out the latter change has enabled the company to make the former change. The Korean media is reporting that Samsung will save some money by shipping the Galaxy S24 phones with the Exynos 2400 processor. It plans to use that money to bump up the RAM and storage while keeping the prices unchanged.
According to the new report, Samsung spent about 50 percent more money on purchasing smartphone processors in 2022 than in 2021. Since chipsets are purchased well ahead of a new phone’s release, those numbers should be reflecting the company’s increased expenses in equipping the Galaxy S23 series with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset globally. While chip prices have gone up in recent years, the absence of a flagship Exynos processor added to increased costs. It weakened the Korean firm’s negotiation power with Qualcomm.
To bring the manufacturing cost down, Samsung is now considering switching back to Exynos. It is already working on the Exynos 2400 with some big improvements in tow, at least on paper. Meanwhile, with the money saved from this change, the company plans to offer more RAM and storage on the base variants. Rumors have it that the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ will both come with 12GB of RAM (up from 8GB), while the Galaxy S24 Ultra will also go from 12GB RAM to 16GB. All three models will start at 256GB of storage. This year’s base Galaxy S23 model shipped with 128GB of storage.
Galaxy S24 with Exynos 2400 may be a tough sell unless Samsung has turned it around
Samsung shipping the Galaxy S23 series with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 “for Galaxy” globally made everyone happy. Exynos processors have been performing worse than competing Snapdragon solutions for the past several years. They have been poor at everything, from everyday performance and battery efficiency to thermal management and more. The Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S23 arguably offers the best performance and battery life ever on a Samsung flagship.
Considering all this, Samsung going back to Exynos with the Galaxy S24 series next year may not be the best idea. The company could find it tough to sell those phones, even with more RAM and storage. That’s unless it has turned things around and left behind Exynos’ woes for once and all. Early rumors have been promising but we’ll have to wait for data backing that the Exynos 2400 is as good as Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 if not better. Both chipsets will debut in late 2023.
