Some of you have already heard of Bluesky. That is a Twitter competitor created by Twitter’s co-founder, Jack Dorsey. That app wasn’t available on Android, until now, as Bluesky is now available via the Google Play Store.

Twitter alternative Bluesky lands on Android, but it’s not yet available to everyone

That being said, do note that you’ll need an invite in order to use it. You can navigate here and join the waitlist. Bluesky will email you once it’s ready to allow you to enter. The service is still in beta, which is why the invite system is in place.

Having said that, if you check out the gallery below the article, you’ll see some official screenshots Bluesky shared. If the interface looks familiar, well, there’s a good reason why… Bluesky obviously aims to be Twitter’s competitor.

It also has Twitter-like functions. It allows you to follow other users, and search for them. You can create posts with photos in them, and so on. Checking out your notifications is also easy, and you’ll notice that there’s your profile icon available too. Even profiles have both profile and cover pictures.

Some features are still missing

There are still a lot of features missing, though, such as direct messages. We’re sure the team is working on those, though. There are currently around 25,000 users on the platform, mainly due to the invite system.

Now, Bluesky is not as new as you’d think. It was launched back in 2019 as a Twitter-backed site. It separated from Twitter in 2021. Bluesky is looking to become a great alternative to Twitter, following Elon Musk’s takeover.

Bluesky’s CEO, Jay Graber, said that the app wants to let users decide how they want to see and consume social media. Last month, he said: “For users, the ability to customize their feed will give them back control of their most valuable resource: their attention”.

He also added that moderation is what’s missing on the platform, which is why it’s not open to the public yet. The company will use both automated filtering and server-level moderation controlled by admins.
