A24 has released a new trailer for Beau Is Afraid, the latest feature film from Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar). Part dark comedy and part horror, the film could be Aster’s most bizarre yet, going by the promotional materials. Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix leads the cast as Beau, a troubled man whose journey home comes with some unexpected challenges following the passing of his overbearing mother. Written and directed by Aster, the movie stars Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Denis Ménochet, Kylie Rogers, Armen Nahapetian, Zoe Lister-Jones, with Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone.
In the feature, “a paranoid man goes on an epic odyssey in order to get back home in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film,” per A24.
“I’ve been thinking about this movie for, like, 10 years,” Aster recently said in a behind-the-scenes video promoting the film. “There’s a part of me that can’t believe we’re making this film. It’s epic, jumbo. Every detail has a detail inside of it.”
Aster further teased, “If you pumped a 10-year-old full of Zoloft and had him get your groceries, that’s like this movie. It’s like a Jewish Lord of the Rings, but he’s just going to his mom’s house. I want to put you in the experience of being a loser.”
Beau Is Afraid Pushed Joaquin Phoenix
Aster also recently spoke about how much he benefited from casting an actor like Phoenix for the lead role in Beau Is Afraid. The filmmaker came out of the experience feeling like he was taught “how to work in the future.” Phoenix also gave great praise to Aster and how seriously he took the project, which in turn helped the Joker star put in an even better performance.
“I knew that I could never, ever just act in front of Ari,” Phoenix recently told the New York Times. “It’s something that I find repulsive and difficult to do. You couldn’t do that with Ari. He would sense it immediately. It’s nice to know that you are working with somebody like that. Sometimes it’s as simple as, I could be around you for four months because I like the way you talk about these characters. I can see that you have a willingness to push yourself, and to be pushed and to push back, and that’s exciting to me.”
Beau Is Afraid comes to movie theaters on April 21, 2023.
