Amazon‘s brand-new Kindle Scribe is getting a major software update. The device is getting new brush types, support for subfolders, improvements for page navigation, and more. The update, which is the first since its release in late 2022, should be available to all users over the next few days.

The Kindle Scribe is three new brush types with this update. You can now pick from Fountain pen, Marker, and Pencil for drawing and taking notes. This is in addition to the existing Pen option. All brush types let you choose between five thickness levels. Amazon is also letting Kindle Scribe users create subfolders within folders for categorizing notes more efficiently. To add a subfolder, all you have to do is tap on the Plus (+) sign within a folder. You can also move subfolders between folders, which helps in quickly reorganizing content.

Improved page navigation, meanwhile, makes it easier to jump to specific pages in a lengthy note. You can simply type in the page number to go to that page. You’ll find the “Go to page” option in the overflow menu on the main toolbar. Last but not least, the Kindle Scribe is getting new screen saver images with its first update (via). Note that you must turn off the Display Cover feature to set screen savers. You can do that by navigating to More > Settings > Display Options. Once done, screen savers will appear when the device is locked.

This is the first update of many for the Kindle Scribe

Amazon launched the Kindle Scribe in September last year, ten years after it discontinued the Kindle DX. The device started shipping in December. Priced at $339, it is the company’s most expensive e-reader ever. But the 10.2-inch slate was a bit rough when it came out. It particularly didn’t impress early adopters in the software department. The product left a lot to be desired with its unpolished software and lack of basic features such as handwriting-to-text.

However, there was hope that the Kindle Scribe will get better over time since the e-commerce giant announced that it will roll out regular software updates to the device. After a few months of waiting, the first update is here. Plenty of work still needs to be done, but the promise is there. If you’re using the Kindle Scribe, you can download this update from Amazon’s official website here (firmware version 5.16.1.2). The file weighs 265MB. Stay tuned for more updates in the future.
