Pixel 7a visits the FCC as Google prepares for its launch

The Google Pixel 7a is getting closer to launch. The device seems to have just picked up FCC approval. While the regulatory body didn’t explicitly name the phone, it’s unlikely that we are looking at the Pixel Fold here, let alone the Pixel 8 series. Let’s dive deeper into what was revealed.

The FCC recently certified a new Google device identified by model numbers G0DZQ, GHL1X, GWKK3, and G82U8. The documents suggest it’s the same “phone” with varying identifiers. Spotted by 9to5Google, the regulatory body explains that “FCC ID: A4RG0DZQ (parent model for NFC), FCC ID: A4RGWKK3 (parent model for BT/WLAN) and FCC ID: A4RGHL1X (variant model) use the same identical internal printed circuit board layouts”. The fourth identifier (G82U8) refers to a variant model with mmWave 5G capabilities.

While that may not conclusively tell you that the device in question is the Pixel 7a, there are more clues here. The serial numbers of devices used in testing by the FCC typically begin with “28291FQHN” or 28251FQHN”.  If you remember, the upcoming mid-range smartphone from Google was leaked in a hands-on video early last month. It had a similar serial number (2A281FQHN). This strongly suggests that the FCC has certified the Pixel 7a and not the Pixel Fold or Pixel 8. The Pixel 6a was also available with mmWave support through Verizon last year, so that’s added proof.

The new Pixel could arrive soon

The FCC documents may have failed to precisely establish that it’s the Pixel 7a, but the very sighting on the FCC website is an indication that the device is nearing its launch. Whatever it is, the new Google product should go official within the next few months. The company announced the Pixel 6a during its Google I/O developer conference in May last year. The 2023 edition of the annual event should take place around the same time and it should be the best platform for the Pixel 7a to debut as well.

As for the Pixel Fold, it is still a mystery. Leaks and rumors about it have been coming for well over a year and haven’t died down a bit yet. Last week, we were told that the device will be heavier than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4. But the product itself appears far from ready for prime time. We may hear something about the foldable from Google at its developer conference in a few months. Until then, we will have to be content with leaks and rumors. Stay tuned for the official dates for Google I/O 2023.
