Yesterday, James Gunn unveiled his vision for the future of the DCU. We got a whole bunch of exciting new announcements, including a Swamp Thing movie, bringing The Authority to the big screen, and a vague confirmation that Aquaman 3 is likely to happen. But one of the coolest has to be a movie based on Tom King’s 2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
This series ditches the traditional happy-go-lucky take on the character for someone who’s more guarded and suspicious, a personality grounded in her being a survivor of Krypton who’s watched everyone she loved die around her, and Gunn revealed himself to be a huge fan.
“One of my favorite comic book series from last year was Tom King’s run on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, so we’re gonna turn that into a big science fiction epic film.”
King is over the moon that his vision will become one of the DCU’s hottest prospects, taking to Twitter to pay tribute to everyone that supported the project and read it:
One interesting factor to consider is that the DCU is about to get a whole new Supergirl in The Flash, as played by Sasha Calle. This upcoming spin on the character is in murky waters at the moment, seeing as the Woman of Tomorrow take is so specific it won’t necessarily match what we’re getting in this summer’s long-awaited solo debut for Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster.
With DC and Warner Bros. still hyped for The Flash despite its production woes and the avalanche of bad press, it seems we may soon have two Supergirls running side by side in the DCU. It’ll be interesting to see how long that lasts.
