Samsung has released the January 2023 security patch for four different foldable smartphones in the US. The latest security update is available for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Flip 5G. They join dozens of other models at the party.
For users with the third-gen Fold, i. e. the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the January SMR (Security Maintenance Release) is rolling out with firmware version F926USQS2EWA2 (via). The update is live on Comcast and Xfinity Mobile networks, with others to follow soon. You may have noticed that it is the carrier-locked version (model number SM-F926U) we are talking about. That’s because the update isn’t yet available for factory-unlocked units (SM-F926U1). But, Samsung likely won’t keep those users waiting for much longer.
The Flip model of the same generation is also getting the latest security update in the US. Once again, the rollout has begun for the carrier-locked versions on the same two networks, with an identical firmware build number (F711USQS3EWA2). But, as said earlier, it should just be a matter of time before all eligible Galaxy Z Flip 3 units pick up the January SMR stateside. Unsurprisingly, neither foldable is getting any new features here. Samsung is only pushing this month’s vulnerability fixes.
The story follows a slightly different pattern for the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The unlocked version of the 2020 Fold model is initially getting the latest security patch. The updated firmware version for this foldable is F916U1UEU2IVLA. It appears to be getting some additional bug fixes and optimizations along with the January SMR. Don’t be hopeful for major new features, though. One UI 5.1, which will debut with the Galaxy S23 series next week, will be the next feature update for the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is also getting the January update in the US
The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is another Samsung smartphone that is getting the January SMR in the US. In this case, the update is already available for both carrier-locked and unlocked units.
The updated firmware versions are F707USQS3GWA1 and F707U1UES3GWA1, respectively. If you’re using any of these Samsung foldables stateside, the latest security update should be available to you over the next few days. You can go to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install to check for updates manually. All of these foldables will get One UI 5.1 in the coming months. We will let you know when the rollouts begin.
