The January 2023 Android security patch is rolling out to Samsung‘s Galaxy S22 series in the US. Initially available for unlocked units, the update reaches the US shores ahead of international markets. The new SMR (security Maintenance Release) should expand to more markets and also cover carrier-locked units stateside in the coming days.
The latest SMR for unlocked Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra in the US comes with firmware version S90*U1UES2BVL4, SamMobile reports. The publication can already confirm rollouts on AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Cricket Wireless, US Cellular, and Xfinity Mobile’s networks. The remaining few wireless providers should also get in the act soon as Samsung expands the rollout globally.
As you might have guessed after seeing the new build number, this update doesn’t contain anything apart from the latest vulnerability fixes. For the uninitiated, the “S” before the last five digits of the build number indicates a security-only release. Updates containing new features or any other changes have “U” there. The Galaxy S22 trio not getting anything else isn’t surprising, though. They picked up plenty of goodies with the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 update a couple of months back. Samsung is now readying One UI 5.1 with a handful of more new features and changes.
This update is all about security. The Galaxy S22 lineup is getting fixes for more than 70 vulnerabilities. As usual, the package contains Google’s latest ASB (Android Security Bulletin as well). More than 50 patches are part of the new ASB, with the Android maker labeling all of them as high-severity flaws. The remaining 20 vulnerabilities patched this month were specific to Samsung’s Galaxy devices. The Korean firm says it patched various flaws in Knox Service, Secure Folder, NFC, Wi-Fi service, and many other device components, services, and system apps.
Samsung updates another Galaxy device to the January 2023 security patch
Samsung began rolling out the January 2023 security update to its devices earlier this week. Over the past few days, the company has seeded the latest SMR to the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Flip LTE/5G, Galaxy A73, Galaxy A10, and Galaxy Note 20 lineup. The Galaxy S22 series is the latest entrant to the party. If you’re using any of these Galaxy smartphones, watch out for a new update in the coming days.
