Samsung is rolling out the January 2023 Android security patch to the Galaxy Note 20 series in the US. This latest update is available for the unlocked models of the last Note-branded Samsung flagships stateside. The carrier-locked units should pick up this release in the coming days.
The January SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the unlocked Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in the US is rolling out with firmware version N98*U1UES3GVL1. The new update is already live for units on most carrier networks, including AT&T, Verizon, Xfinity Mobile, Comcast, and Cricket Wireless. Users on other networks should also receive the update soon. And, as said earlier, Samsung will soon cover the carrier-locked models as well. This update has yet to arrive in any markets outside of the US, but it should be just a matter of time now.
This month’s security release contains patches for more than 70 vulnerabilities. 20 of those are Galaxy-specific issues affecting various device components, services, and apps including NFC, Knox Service, Secure Folder, and Wi-Fi Service. The rest of the patches are part of Google’s latest ASB (Android Security Bulletin). They take care of flaws in Android OS and other partner components. All 52 ASB patches were labeled “high-severity” by the Android maker.
Samsung will update more Galaxy devices to the January 2023 SMR soon
Samsung began rolling out the January 2023 SMR to its Galaxy devices a few days back. The Galaxy Note 10 series was the first to pick up this year’s inaugural security release from the Korean firm. The Galaxy S21 lineup followed almost immediately. The company has since updated the Galaxy A73, Galaxy Z Flip LTE/5G, and the Galaxy A10 to the new SMR. Yes, the four-year-old budget handset Galaxy A10 has also already received this month’s security update, at least in some markets. A wider rollout for all of these models should be just around the corner.
Likewise, the latest security update should reach more Galaxy devices in the coming days. Samsung still has the likes of Galaxy S22, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and a host of other flagship models awaiting the January SMR. We will let you know when the rollout for those devices begins. In the meantime, if you’re using the Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in the US, go to Settings, select the Software update option, and tap on Download and install to check for updates. If you don’t see any updates, check again a few days later.
