A God Of War TV show is officially going to be developed at Amazon following months of rumors, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Amazon even has some big talent on board to head up the project. Joint creators of The Expanse, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, along with the showrunner for Amazon’s Wheel Of Time series Rafe Judkins, will be adapting the popular game franchise for the TV screen. In addition to Ostby, Fergus, and Judkins, Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Balrog (creative director for the 2018 game) is also on board.
God Of War is also one of many game adaption projects Sony is working on. The closest to release is The Last Of Us launching on HBO Max on January 15, 2023. But there are a ton of other projects already confirmed to be in the works. Including a Ghost Of Tsushima film, as well as projects for Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo, Bloodborne and more.
For God Of War, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios will be working together with PlayStation Productions. With the film having been in development since March of this year.
The God Of War TV show will be based on the 2018 game
When it comes to games being adapted for TV or film, there hasn’t been a great track record. While some adaptions have found success, like Sonic The Hedgehog, the most recent Mortal Kombat movie, and Detective Pikachu just to name a few, there is a long history of these adaptions being botched. The DOOM movie, the recent Netflix adaption of Resident Evil, Warcraft, Need for Speed… the list goes on.
With so many game adaptions having been, not great, it’s easy to be skeptical of any upcoming projects. The Last Of Us certainly looks very promising. And there’s a good chance that God Of War could be promising as well.
The series will reportedly be adapted from the 2018 game. Which was nominated for and won Game of The Year. That success could carry over to TV show with The Expanse creators on board. And provided the writing and casting are done well.
Right now there’s no release date for the series. But don’t expect it to be soon considering Amazon’s breadth of current projects that include adapting The Dark Tower novels, a second season of Jack Ryan and more.
