There’s no end to the flurry of software updates coming out through Samsung‘s doors. On one hand, the company is rapidly seeding Android 13 to its remaining eligible Galaxy devices as it seeks to complete the update before the end of 2022. On the other hand, the firm is picking up the pace with its December security update. The latest SMR (Security Maintenance Release) has reached a few more Galaxy devices today. Namely, the Galaxy S22 series and the Galaxy A52, both of which have already received Android 13.

The December security patch is widely rolling out to the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. As of this writing, users in India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, the Netherlands, and Vietnam are getting the update. The new firmware version in these countries is S90*EXXU2BVKM. The rollout should soo reach other markets, including the US. Note that the build number may vary depending on your region, device model, and processor.

Samsung also recently released the December SMR for the Galaxy A52. The 4G LTE model of the phone is initially picking up the new security update. The rollout has begun in a host of European countries, including Germany, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. The updated firmware version for this premium mid-range smartphone is A525FXXS4CVK4. It should just be a matter of time before the company brings the release to other European markets and also covers the 5G model.

The December security update patches 80 vulnerabilities in Galaxy devices

The December SMR for Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and tablets patches as many as 80 vulnerabilities. Of those 67 vulnerability patches are part of Google’s latest ASB (Android Security Bulletin). These are flaws in Android OS and other partner components. They affect all Android products using those components. Google labeled five ASB patches in December as critical. Some of them could lead to remote code execution without any additional privileges. Additionally, 60 patches were labeled “high-severity” by the Android makers.

Along with these ASB patches, the December SMR also brings 13 Galaxy-specific vulnerability fixes. These issues don’t exist in Android products from other brands. If you’re using the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, Galaxy S22 Ultra, or Galaxy A52, all of these security fixes will reach your phone in the coming days. As usual, you can wait for a notification about the OTA (over the air) release or manually check for updates from the Settings app. Since updates are rolled out in batches, it may take a few days before everyone gets the latest release.
