Modern scream queen Melissa Barrera faces a new kind of terror in Bed Rest, a psychological horror thriller that is days away from its debut on the free streaming platform Tubi. Barrera, who appeared in this year’s Scream movie and is set to return in the upcoming Scream 6, stars in the film as a pregnant woman whose bed rest leads to her mind completely unraveling, having her question what’s real and what’s not. You can get a sneak peek at Bed Rest by watching Tubi’s trailer below ahead of the streaming premiere on Dec. 7, 2022.
The official synopsis for Bed Rest is as follows:
After years of struggling to start a family, Julie Rivers (Barrera) is pregnant again and moving into a new home with her husband as they embrace a fresh start. Upon being ordered to mandatory bed rest, Julie begins to slowly unravel as she suffers through the monotony and anxiety of her new constraints. Soon, terrifying ghostly experiences in the home begin to close in on Julie, stirring up her past demons and causing others to question her mental stability. Trapped and forced to face her past, and the supernatural, Julie fights to protect herself and her unborn baby.
In addition to starring, Barrera makes her producer debut with the film, producing alongside writer-director Lori Evans Taylor as well as Project X’s William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein.
Melissa Barrera Was Impressed With the Script
After finding success with acting, Barrera was eager to put on a producer’s hat, and Bed Rest serves as a great project for her to make her debut in that role. She has explained that it was the screenplay for Bed Rest that had drawn her to the film, making her eager to get involved with the movie from both sides of the camera.
“When I reached the end, I was crying in my trailer,” Barrera says. “Horror movies and supernatural thrillers can be very entertaining, but they rarely make me so emotional. In any project, I want something that feels like it’s pushing the boundaries of the genre. That’s how I felt about this script. Even though I’m not a mother, my love for my family is what drives me, and I can imagine the loss of someone I love casting a shadow on my life.”
On taking on the producer role, resulting in the actress getting involved creatively to help shape the story, Barrera added, “I’d always wanted to produce because I want a little bit more say in the stories that I choose to tell. I was lucky that William and Project X trusted me and how I think. William knew that I was gonna want to make this the best version of the movie that we could make, and that I cared.”
