Check out the trailer for When You Finish Saving the World below.
When You Finish Saving the World is written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg in his feature directorial debut. The movie is based on the 2020 audio drama of the same name, also written by Eisenberg, and went on to win the 2021 Audie Award for Original Work.
The plot follows a mother and her teenage son who can’t seem to connect, yet they try to find that bond in other people. High school student Ziggy Katz (Finn Wolfhard) performs original folk-rock songs for an adoring online fan base, a concept that mystifies his formal and uptight mother, Evelyn (Julianne Moore), who runs a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse.
Evelyn soon latches on to a young boy she meets at her women’s shelter while her son falls in love with a highly political student at his school.
When You Finish Saving the World stars Julianne Moore as Evelyn Katz and Finn Wolfhard as Ziggy Katz, with the rest of the cast comprised of Alisha Boe (Do Revenge, 13 Reasons Why), Jay O. Sanders (The Day After Tomorrow, Blindspot), Billy Bryk (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), and Eleonore Hendricks (Songs My Brothers Taught Me).
When You Finish Saving the World Premiered at Sundance Earlier This Year
When You Finish Saving the World premiered at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of this year, and has been met with largely positive reviews from critics. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian calls When You Finish Saving the World “a well-acted, ironic yet sentimental portrayal of a tricky mother-son dynamic,” while The Wrap’s Steve Pond describes the coming-of-age flick as “a veritable symphony in awkward conversations; if you’re not cringing half the time, you’re not paying attention.”
Esther Zuckerman of Thrillist is quick to point out how Jesse Eisenberg’s on-screen persona bleeds over into his directorial work, saying, “You can feel the nervous, motor-mouthed energy Jesse Eisenberg brings out of his best performances in his directorial debut, When You Finish Saving the World.”
Finally, Collider’s Ross Bonaime warned that When You Finish Saving the World may scare some people off with its handling of the subject matter, but ultimately found the story at the movie’s core to be a rewardingly endearing one; “When You Finish Saving the World is often acidic to a point that might scare away some, but at its core, Eisenberg’s film is an endearing story of mother and son who were once so close, and now struggle to get what they need from each other anymore.”
When You Finish Saving the World is scheduled to be released on January 20, 2023.
