Martin Lawrence is returning as a crime-solving detective, although his latest role is far from his time as Marcus in the long-running Bad Boys franchise. This time, Lawrence will be playing Detective Jake Doyle in Mindcage, a thrilling feature film focused on a notorious serial killer and a copycat who seems one step ahead of his every move.

Mindcage follows Lawrence and Melissa Roxburgh, who plays Mary Kelly, as the two work to solve a string of murders that have a chilling connection to a previous case. John Malkovich is the infamous serial killer known as The Artist, who poisoned his victims and decorated the corpses in what he would call his “masterpiece.” Kelly will have no choice but to conduct interviews with The Artist, looking for clues as to how they will stop his copycat. Unfortunately, Lawrence is the detective that put him behind bars awaiting a death sentence, meaning there’s quite a bit of history between the pair. The official trailer can be found below, which is sure to get audiences hearts racing.

The official synopsis from Lionsgate reads: “In this spellbinding thriller, detectives Jake Doyle (Martin Lawrence) and Mary Kelly (Melissa Roxburgh) seek the help of an incarcerated serial killer named The Artist (John Malkovich) when a copycat killer strikes. While Mary searches for clues in The Artist’s brilliant but twisted psyche, she and Jake are lured into a diabolical game of cat and mouse, racing against time to stay one step ahead of The Artist and his copycat.”

Mindcage comes from director Mauro Borrelli, with previous experience working on The Recall, WarHunt, and The Ghostmaker. The film is nearly ready for release, as Mindcage debuts in select theaters and on-demand on Dec. 16.

Mindcage centers around two detectives and their relationship with a serial killer, as one interviews The Artist, and the other contemplates their long history with the subject. Judging from the trailer, either The Artist or the copycat killer has a plan for Roxburgh’s character, as she seems to be at the center of the mystery taking place.

Based on the description and trailer, Mindcage has a similar premise to Silence of the Lambs, though both films will be able to differentiate themselves from one another. However, the detective-inmate relationship between the characters should be intriguing, as John Malkovich is sure to give an entertaining and believable performance as The Artist that keeps audiences up at night.

Reggie Keyohara III reunites with frequent collaborator Mauro Borrelli to write Mindcage, while Phil Hunt, Matthew Helderman, Robert Knepper, Compton Ross, Luke Taylor, Charli Taylor, and Viviana Zarragoitia serve as executive producers. Viewers should be in for a bone-chilling experience when Malkovich, Lawrence, and Roxburgh lead the intense Lionsgate film, Mindcage this December.
