Water, Family, and Life

As The Way of Water trailer opens with soothing tribal music, we watch two Na’vi jump into a coral reef. Instantly, they are surrounded by all kinds of life. We watch as one of them marvels at the different types of fish. Something of a cross between a sideways stingray and a jellyfish swims past them. The fish almost seem to be flying in this weightless, underwater world. These Na’vi might be Jake and Neytiri’s children.

We know they’ve been starting a family because, in the next shot of the trailer, Neytiri fumbles at drawing her bow as the drawstring touches her pregnant belly. We might see all stages of Jake and Neytiri’s family because we know we’ll get to see their kids. We see Neytiri later when she isn’t pregnant, so maybe this film will start with a bit of their family with another one on the way.

Next, we see Jake’s daughter celebrating the life of Pandora simply by dancing through the jungles there. She seems to be starting adolescence as she pleads with her father for him not to think she’s crazy. She tells Jake that she feels the planet’s heartbeat and assures him of her connection to the world’s life. Maybe just as she becomes a teenager, she begins to have some deeply spiritual, almost extra-sensory connection to the planet.

This may be true because when we see Jake’s daughter lying on the ground, the whole jungle around her seems to resonate with her heartbeat. The leaves of grass wave back and forth, and seeds of the Tree of Souls float gently toward her. When Jake asks her what the heartbeat sounds like, she responds, “Mighty.”

A Different Tribe of Na’vi

When the music comes to a crescendo, we see cuts of Jake’s daughter connecting to different forms of ocean life, and we see Jake himself riding his ikran again. A small group of Na’vi jump in and out of the ocean on their flying banshees. But then, fire coats the water as we get our first shot of a human, mechanical exoskeleton running through the flames. A familiar enemy must have returned to threaten the Na’vi once more.

Jake crushes a human skull in his hand, implying just how much resentment he has for these greedy industrialists he was once a part of. A taller Na’vi, with a lighter shade of skin and feathered shoulder dressings, tells Jake, “We cannot let you bring your war here.” These might be a different tribe of Na’vi. Where the Na’vi we saw in the first Avatar worshiped the Tree of Souls, these Na’vi might worship the oceans of Pandora.

We hear a voice say, “The way of water connects all things, before your birth and after your death,” this may be one of these other Na’vi explaining their culture to the other tribe. We know they are separate because we see some competing and wrestling on the ground. A Na’vi that might be Jake’s son explains that he’s worried about being seen as an outcast.

The humans are definitely back in force for this movie. The trailer is intercut with images of massive human machinery, unlike the ones we saw in the first movie. It seems this time, they’ve brought an aircraft carrier with them. We also see a human base with massive hangar bay doors floating on the water when the fight between them and the Na’vi begins.

There is a shot of Jake’s daughter exerting some type of force with her hands, and then we see a massive whale leap out of the ocean and crash onto an aircraft carrier. She may have some latent empathic abilities that allow her to communicate with the animals of Pandora. In the trailer’s closing shot, we watch Jake tell Neytiri, “Strong heart.”

We can’t wait to see what all this means when Avatar: The Way of Water releases in theaters on December 16, 2022.
