A new Google Play System update has appeared for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro users, but they can’t install it. It is worth noting that it has not appeared for all users, and it’s possible this was a mistake on Google’s part.

New Google Play system update appears on the Pixel 7 series, but it can’t be installed

The Pixel 7 series runs a Google Play System update from July. So a new one was expected to arrive soon after Google started shipping the devices to consumers. It did arrive on some phones, but it’s not exactly functioning.

The current Google Play System update is over 90 days old. Just to be clear, both devices do run October security patches, this is the Google Play system update we’re talking about, not the Android OS update.

In any case, users who see the update are prompted by the Security Hub to install it. The update itself weighs only 7.6KB, and it says: “Latest security update from Google. Update now to keep safe and improve device stability”.

Pixel 7 failed Google Play system upgrade

Tapping “Download & Install” briefly throws you to a new screen, 9to5Google reports, but then you’re brought back with the following message: “Updates are temporarily unavailable. Try again later”.

Repeating the process or restarting your phone won’t help

If you try to update again, that won’t do much good. Restarting your phone won’t help either. It is quite possible Google rolled out this update by mistake. The sheer size of it is a bit odd, to be quite honest.

Google will likely fix this problem really soon, so there’s nothing to worry about. This won’t affect your phone usage or anything of the sort. It would be nice to get the latest Google Play system update as soon as possible, though, of course.

Considering the bugs we’ve seen on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro straight away, this is basically nothing. It does not affect your usage in a direct way.
