MediaTek has launched a new mid-range processor, the Dimensity 1080. It builds on the Dimensity 920 launched in August last year. The upgraded version brings some key improvements and should power premium mid-range Android phones in the coming months.
Dimensity 1080 specifications
MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 processor is fabricated on the same 6nm process node from TSMC as its predecessor. It features two slightly higher-clocked ARM Cortex-A78 cores operating at a maximum frequency of 2.6GHz (up from 2.5GHz). The six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores are still clocked at 2GHz, while the ARM Mali G68 GPU carrier over unchanged too.
The most notable upgrade comes in the camera department. The Dimensity 1080 can handle cameras up to 200MP resolution, up from 108MP the Dimensity 920 supported. We have only had one 200MP camera smartphone so far but it could become a trend next year. The new Dimensity processor supports 4K HDR video encoding with hardware acceleration, though it isn’t a new feature. You get multi-camera support as well.
The rest of the stuff largely remains unchanged. The Dimensity 1080 comes with an integrated 5G modem for sub-6GHz 5G connectivity. It supports carrier aggregation and dual 5G SIM with dual standby. The chipset also boasts support for LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage. UFS 4.0 is already here but you can expect to see it on flagships processors only. Mid-range solutions may not offer the UFS 4.0 storage standard anytime soon.
Other highlights of the Dimensity 1080 include support for up to 120Hz screen refresh rate, Bluetooth 5.2, and Wi-Fi 6 with 2X MIMO (multiple input, multiple output). It features the same AI Processing Unit (APU 3.0) and HyperEngine 3.0 as the Dimensity 920.
“Continuing MediaTek’s legacy of optimizing power and performance, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations about what a 5G smartphone can do,” said CH Chen, a Deputy General Manager at MediaTek (via). “This new chipset is designed to further enhance many of the functions that made its predecessor great, including processing power, camera and video quality, and time to market for manufacturers.”
The new MediaTek chipset will debut later this year
MediaTek has taken an already capable Dimensity 920 and improved some key components, such as the ISP (Image Signal Processor), in line with modern needs to come up with the Dimensity 1080. Upcoming premium mid-range smartphones from manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, and others could use this chipset. The Taiwanese company says the new processor will start shipping inside devices in Q4 2022, i. e. before the end of this year.
