Deadpool 3’s Wolverine Announcement Details You Might Have Missed

Deadpool 3’s Wolverine announcement really shook up the MCU. When Ryan Reynolds got on TikTok with Hugh Jackman, he might not have been expecting to break the internet just that much. Everyone got very excited but noticed that Wolverine died in the 2017 film, Logan. Then we learned that Logan takes place in 2029 when Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman made their second video. They also told us what would be happening in their new film. But none of us could hear it due to the fact it was drowned out by the awesome sounds of WHAM!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” Thank god the internet can read lips!

There’s a lot more to this announcement than you might think. Deadpool 3 won’t need to rewrite the timeline to include Logan, but there are a lot of timey-wimey things happening anyway. Remember at the end of Deadpool 2 when Deadpool scored Cable’s time-traveling watch and went back to rewrite X-Men Origins? Remember when Wolverine’s consciousness got sent back in X-Men: Days of Future Past, and he messed with the X-Men timeline? Deadpool and Wolverine were traveling through time way before the TVA and the Quantum Realm, and they could potentially be some of the most significant characters in the Multiverse. Here are some Easter eggs you may have missed.

Lip Reading the Deadpool 3 Announcement

During Ryan Reynolds’ second announcement, he and Hugh Jackman started to riff a bit about what might happen in Deadpool 3. They could be seen going back and forth, pretending to stab each other with various imaginary weapons and generally enacting what already looks like an awesome film. But the whole time they were speaking, they played “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by WHAM! over the entire thing.

But that’s ok because the internet decoded it by reading their lips:

Reynolds: These two f**king guys get out there…

Jackman: Yes!

Reynolds: And he’s like Grrrr!

Jackman: Pulls the f**king thing

Reynolds: And I’m just like: gooooo! And I just f**king catch him.

Jackman: And then I…

Reynolds: And I’m chasing him all over the place, and we’re going through stuff and through all these different places.

Jackman: And we’re gonna have this massive massive huge huge f**king explosion!

Reynolds: Yeah, and I’ve got the swords that, ssshhhk, boom! (and he pretends to stab Hugh Jackman)

Jackman: …and woomf. (he raises his fist as if he were brandishing his Wolverine claws, and pretends to stab Reynolds in the head) That’s it! (Then as he continues pretend to kill Reynolds, one of the punches actually lands and he says) Whoops! (Then Reynolds gets back up)

Reynolds: But I’m fine! I’m totally laughing about it!

Jackman: And I’m alive too, but you really have to see this because we’re in our prime. It’s true, the prime.

Reynolds: And what a way to make it up to you,

Jackman: I’m so excited about this you’re just gonna f**king love it!

Reynolds: It’s gonna be the best.

And then the music cuts out, and the actors thank Kevin Feige. So they didn’t really reveal anything about the movie underneath the music, but that’s probably only because the film hasn’t even been written yet. Still, we got to see a very excited Hugh Jackman and a very happy Ryan Reynolds. There aren’t many clues about the movie, but some more Easter eggs are hidden in the announcement.

Deadpool and Wolverine are More Powerful than the Multiverse

What might happen in Deadpool 3‘s plot is hidden inside the Wolverine announcement. In the first TikTok that Reynolds put out, Reynolds is reading a comic book while sitting on the toilet in his Deadpool suit. It’s actually Wolverine Vol. 7 No. 21, which is the latest team-up for Wolverine and Deadpool in the comics. In it, they fight Danger, the sentient personification of the X-Men’s Danger Room, that room in Xavier’s Mansion that trains all of the X-Men. That might be a little hint at who they’re thinking of for villains in this upcoming movie.

The Deadpool 2 post-credits scene practically sets up Deadpool 3 as if they knew all this would happen back in 2018. Deadpool goes back in time to X-Men Origins: Wolverine when Ryan Reynolds first played Wade Wilson. Deadpool kills that old version of himself and tells Wolverine that one day, after he quits being Wolverine, Deadpool is going to come and ask a favor. Maybe they really do have Cable’s watch?

Supposedly X-Men Origins was erased by the events of Days of Future Past, but Wolverine and Deadpool’s healing factor gives them a unique immunity to timeline correction. Their ability to heal gives them the ability to remember events they experienced that may have been altered by time-traveling shenanigans.

There is precedent in the comics for this. It means that these two heroes have a very special power over the Multiverse. And this movie might play a central role in how Marvel will map out its Multiverse continuity in the coming years.

Deadpool 3 will kick off the MCU’s Phase 6 on September 6, 2024.
