The Google Pixel Watch will not boast fall detection at launch. The company announced the feature during the watch’s unveiling yesterday. However, users will only get it next year. Google hasn’t even provided a precise date yet. It simply says fall detection is “coming in 2023”. An official support page states that the feature will roll out this winter. So we might get it early next year. We will let you know when the Pixel Watch picks up fall detection.
Google will add fall detection support to the Pixel Watch
You might be already aware of the fall detection technology. The Apple Watch series has had it for some time now. The feature detects if you have taken a hard fall while wearing it and will connect you to emergency services. It can even automatically dial a pre-set contact if you’re unresponsive, so they can quickly spring into action. Google‘s car crash detection also works similarly.
The company is adding the feature to its first-ever smartwatch as well. If your Pixel Watch detects a fall, it will alert you and ask if you want to call emergency services. In supported regions, the emergency number is dialed automatically unless you intervene. Australia and Germany are among the regions that don’t support auto-dial.
Unfortunately, fall detection doesn’t seem to be ready for the Pixel Watch yet and won’t arrive out of the box. This is disappointing considering how long Google had the device in development. But the company may be taking its time to ensure the feature works effectively and accurately, so it can be a reliable assistant for elderly people.
The Pixel Watch will also offer an Emergency SOS feature
Fall detection may be missing in action at launch, but the Pixel Watch will offer an Emergency SOS feature out of the box. It is a manual service that lets you quickly reach out to emergency responders or trusted contacts if you are in an emergency or are feeling unsafe and need help. Unlike fall detection, this feature doesn’t work automatically. You have to manually press the crown five times to use Emergency SOS.
The Pixel Watch is now available for pre-order from Google as well as various third-party retailers. We have rounded up all the pre-order promotions and offers for the first-ever Google smartwatch here. General sales of the wearable will begin on October 13. The Pixel 7 series smartphones will also arrive on store shelves on the same day.
