Fans have patiently awaited the follow-up to 2019’s Knives Out, and the long-awaited sequel is nearly here. The first film, which focused on detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) and his investigation into a wealthy family and their father’s caretaker, was a massive global success. The film featured a star-studded cast, with Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, and LaKeith Stanfield all making an appearance. In addition, the whodunnit was a massive success at the box office, totaling $311 million against a $40 million budget.
Of course, a sequel was inevitable, and Netflix wanted in on the action by acquiring the rights to the franchise in 2021. Now, the follow-up, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, is nearing its release date, set for Dec. 23. During the annual Netflix Tudum Festival, director Rian Johnson spoke with fans and shared a brief clip from the upcoming film. Johnson says, “My name is Rian Johnson, and I am very excited to show you guys an exclusive scene from my new movie.” He continues, “It’s the follow-up to Knives Out, and it is called Glass Onion. The mystery begins when a group of old friends all receive an unexpected invitation in the form of an intricate puzzle box,” he explains. “But what starts as a game turns into something much more nefarious. I will shut up at this point and let you watch the clip, but I hope you enjoy it. Thank you.” The full clip from Glass Onion can be found below.
Glass Onion Features a Talented Cast
Like the film before, Glass Onion is set to star a talented cast. During the clip, we get a look at Dave Bautista’s Duke Cody, Madelyn Cline’s Whiskey, Kathryn Hahn’s Claire Debella, and Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel Toussaint, to name a few. Yuri Togkces, Janelle Monáe, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, and Kate Hudson all have roles in the film as well. We know Glass Onion is taking audiences overseas from Knives Out, as the official synopsis for the film reads: “Famed Southern detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece for his latest case.”
There seems to be an emphasis on puzzles with Glass Onion, as Knives Out proved to be a puzzle for audiences to solve throughout the 2-hour runtime of the first movie. Of course, the upcoming sequel will take unexpected twists and turns throughout the film, leaving fans guessing where the movie will be headed. MovieWeb reviewed Glass Onion, calling it a “riotous sequel with a phenomenal cast,” while other reviews praised the early screenings they saw. Audiences can decide how they feel about the sequel for themselves when Glass Onion arrives on Netflix on Dec. 23.
