Decision to Leave looks to be another example of the ominous thrills and psychological drama that director Park Chan-wook has become so well-known for thanks to his previous efforts Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance. Collectively known as The Vengeance Trilogy. The trailer for Decision to Leave certainly teases similar disturbances to the filmmaker’s previous work as Park Hae-il’s lost and lonely detective is dragged slowly into a tale of twists and turns. Park Chan-wook was recently awarded Best Director at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for his work on Decision to Leave.

Produced, co-written and directed by Park Chan-wook, Decision to Leave is led by Tang Wei as the mysterious widow Seo-rae and Park Hae-il as detective Hae-jun, who finds himself caught in her web. The supporting cast includes Lee Jung-hyun, Go Kyung-pyo, Park Yong-woo, and Jung Yi-seo.

Early Reviews Have Praised Decision to Leave for its Neo-Noir Thrills

Decision to Leave recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in Korean theaters in June. Early reviews have heaped praise on director Park Chan-wook’s latest, with many applauding his use of noirish trappings and his ability to create a beautiful cinematic experience.

“A master filmmaker mines cinema’s glamorous past in a nostalgic neo-noir you don’t so much watch as surrender to,” said Total Film’s Neil Smith, while Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian awarded Decision to Leave a stunning 5/5 saying, “It’s a gorgeously and grippingly made picture and Tang Wei is magnificent.”

“It’s no coincidence that illusions and conundrums appear in a Park Chan-wook film. The filmmaker has mastered the ability to conjure elaborate plots that blissfully unveil themselves as the details accumulate, and “Decision to Leave” is no different,” says Iana Murray of The Playlist. Time Out’s Philip De Semlyen adds, “The plot reads like a Hollywood erotic thriller from the early ’90s – a Shattered or Basic Instinct – Park isn’t here for the lurid thrills or wild twists.” Decision to Leave currently sits at an impressive 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Decision to Leave is due to hit theaters in US & Canada on October 14, and will land in theaters in UK and Ireland on October 21.
