Disney have revealed the first teaser trailer for their highly anticipated live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which stars Halle Bailey in the lead role as Ariel. Premiering as part of Disney’s D23 Expo, the teaser trailer takes us on a journey through the ocean with Ariel and gives not only a first look at Halle Bailey’s little mermaid but lets us hear the kind of vocal gymnastics the actress will be bringing to the role. Check out the trailer below.

As with many of Disney’s live-action movies, there is very little that can be faulted in the rendering of the animation, whether it a deserted shipwreck, underwater sea creatures or the shimmering tail of Ariel herself. The real question is how the movie will be received by audiences when it hits cinemas next year, and the trailer doesn’t give too much away when it comes to that.

Even in the short teaser, there are shots that fans of the original 1989 movie will recognize instantly, which suggests that The Little Mermaid will follow the same vein as Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin to adapt the classic Disney animation that we know and love into a shot for shot live-action iteration, with a few new songs and one or two necessary amendments made to expand the short runtime of the original movie into something that is acceptable for a modern cinema audience.

The Little Mermaid Trailer Does Not Show Its Other Characters

While Disney’s first teaser for The Little Mermaid gives a long-awaited first look at Halle Bailey in action as Ariel, it doesn’t even give a hint at the other characters in the movie, if you discount a very fleeting and shadowy appearance by Flounder, Ariel’s fishy friend. This means that we will have to wait until the full trailer is released to see Javier Bardem’s King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.

There have been many issues raised in relation to the casting of Bailey in the lead role, mainly due to the fact that as a Black actress some social media trolls couldn’t see her playing the part of Ariel. Even just from the short shot seen in the teaser, it is clear why Bailey was cast in the role and when the movie stands on its merits, it could provide Disney with their biggest live-action remake yet.

The Little Mermaid has suffered a few delays during its production, and after being caught up in the Covid pandemic it saw its original Summer 2022 release date being pushed back by a whole year to May 2023. While this was a blow to both the cast and crew, as well as fans who cannot wait to see Ariel swim onto the big screen as a live-action character, it was a necessary delay considering the amount of filming delays the movie suffered and how many visual effects were then to be completed in post-production. Although we will not likely see a full trailer for some time yet, this first glimpse is a tantalizing look at what could be another $1 billion baby for Disney.

The Little Mermaid arrives in theaters on May 26, 2023.
