A mysterious, brutal killer is on the loose at a conversion camp in the newly released trailer for upcoming horror outing They/Them. Released courtesy of Peacock, They/Them stars Kevin Bacon as an unsettling conversion camp counselor, and comes from filmmaker John Logan in his feature directorial debut and seminal horror producer Jason Blum. They/Them promises to put a modern spin on the slasher movie.

They/Them begins when a group of LGBTQ+ campers arrive at Whistler Camp — a conversion camp run by Owen Whistler (Kevin Bacon) — they are promised a “new sense of freedom” by the end of the week. But as the counselors attempt to psychologically break down each of the campers, a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, and they must reclaim their power if they’re going to survive the horrors of the camp.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

They/Them is written and directed by Academy Award nominee John Logan. While the horror outing marks Logan’s first time as director, he has quite a background in the world of cinema. Logan is not one, not two, but a three-time Academy Award nominee, having received nominations twice for Best Original Screenplay for Gladiator and The Aviator and once for Best Adapted Screenplay for Hugo. He was also a producer on the likes of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Coriolanus, with They/Them promising to be an auspicious debut behind the camera.

They/Them is being produced by Jason Blum, the go-to name for horror movies these days, with the project described as “an empowering slasher film.” They/Them stars an ensemble cast alongside Kevin Bacon that includes Anna Chlumsky (Inventing Anna, Veep), Theo Germaine (The Politician, Adam), Carrie Preston (Claws, Dr. Death). Quei Tann (How to Get Away with Murder, Dear White People), Austin Crute (Booksmart, Daybreak), Monique Kim (High Expectasians, Looks That Kill), Anna Lore (All American, Doom Patrol), Cooper Koch (Less Than Zero, A New York Christmas Wedding), and Darwin del Fabro (Dangerous Liaisons, Novo Mundo).

They/Them is a Real Passion Project for Debut Director John Logan

They/Them is a slasher tale that has been with writer and director John Logan for quite some time. His entire life, in fact. The debut filmmaker has had the idea for They/Them rolling around in his head for as long as he can remember and feels that the horror genre perfectly reflects certain elements of his own life.

“They/Them has been germinating within me my whole life. I’ve loved horror movies as long as I can remember, I think because monsters represent ‘the other’ and as gay kid I felt a powerful sense of kinship with those characters who were different, outlawed, or forbidden,” writer and director John Logan shared in a statement. “I wanted to make a movie that celebrates queerness, with characters that I never saw when I was growing up. When people walk away from the movie, I hope they’re going to remember the incredible love that these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated.”

They/Them is scheduled to premiere on Peacock on August 5, 2022.
