Knives Out and No Time to Die star Ana de Armas stuns in the first trailer for director Andrew Dominik’s upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde. Released courtesy of the official Netflix YouTube channel, Blonde will blur the lines between fact and fiction as it details the life of the silver screen icon, with the project having made headlines recently for its NC-17 rating.
Led by Ana de Armas as Norma Jeane Mortensen AKA Marilyn Monroe, Blonde “boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe,” the official synopsis from Netflix reads. “From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, ‘Blonde’ blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”
The footage from Blonde shown in the trailer is made up of both black-and-white and color, suggesting that the movie will change as it explores the career of Marilyn Monroe. The most striking thing about the trailer, though, is clearly Ana de Armas, who bears a striking resemblance to the real-life figure. Able to recreate Monroe’s patented smile, the trailer teases the tragedy suffered by Marilyn Monroe, something which she attempts to hide, with the movie promising to give Ana de Armas a lot to work with. The actress has risen to prominence thanks to roles in the likes of No Time to Die, Knives Out, and Blade Runner 2049, and it looks like Blonde will present her with a time to really shine, cementing her as a Hollywood A-lister.
Blonde is written and directed by Andrew Dominik, and is being adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 historical fiction novel of the same name. The supporting cast includes Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio, Julianne Nicholson as Gladys Pearl Baker, Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy, Toby Huss as Allan “Whitey” Snyder, Evan Williams as Edward G. Robinson Jr., and Xavier Samuel as Charles Chaplin Jr., as well as Garret Dillahunt and Scoot McNairy.
Blonde Sees Ana de Armas Transform Into Marilyn Monroe
Ana de Armas has clearly done everything she can to leave her real identity behind and transform into Marilyn Monroe. No easy task. The actress soon realized what a task the performance would be, describing Blonde as the “most intense” work she has ever done. “It took me a year to prepare for that — research and accent and everything you can imagine. Reading material, and talking to Andrew Dominik for months, and getting ready to start. It was three months of shooting nonstop — like, a crazy schedule,” the actress said last month.
Blonde has been seen by a lucky few, and it sounds like de Armas’ commitment has paid off. Joyce Carol Oates, the author of the book on which Blonde is based, revealed that she has seen a rough cut of the movie, praising Ana de Armas for her central performance. “I have seen the rough cut of Andrew Dominick’s [sic] adaptation and it is startling, brilliant, very disturbing and perhaps most surprisingly an utterly ‘feminist’ interpretation… not sure that any male director has ever achieved anything [like] this.”
Blonde is scheduled to release globally on Netflix on September 23, 2022.
