Microsoft said rolling out the Windows 11 update for some older PCs was a mistake from the company. Also, users should not install the updates due to installation errors.
According to Tech Radar, Windows Insiders ( those folks who test Windows updates before public release) who are using older computers have seen a notification on their screen that says the Windows 11 update is ready for their device. It was mind-blowing news for these types of customers because Windows 11 mostly runs on newer PCs and requires solid updated hardware.
However, Microsoft confessed to its mistake, saying it was a mistake from the company’s side. While this might seem like a sweet mistake, a company representative warned Insiders not to install the updates. She said ineligible devices might come up with installation errors.
“We are investigating an issue for Insiders where the banner for Windows 11, version 22H2 is showing for PCs not eligible and working to fix. Choosing to install will result in an error.” a Microsoft representative noted on Twitter.
Microsoft says it was a mistake. However, maybe the company is evaluating the situation for moderating the Windows 11 hardware requirements.
Microsoft surprised Older PC owners with Windows 11 update
The update that was released to older PCs was reportedly a preview version of Windows 11 for this year’s big update. Moreover, it coincided with the release of Windows 11 22H2 to the Release Preview Channel.
Despite Microsoft saying the customers might face errors on older PCs, some Windows Insiders who installed the update on their old device say the OS works fine. Of course, some unlucky customers have also encountered errors, as predicted by Microsoft.
As soon as Microsoft saw this mistake, it immediately removed the upgrade banner from unsupported devices. However, some Insiders said this banner still exists on their ineligible devices. If your device is not eligible to receive Windows 11 update, but you’ve come up with an upgrade banner, Microsoft recommends you not try to install the update.
