Hulu has just unleashed the official trailer for Prey, the latest installment of the Predator movie series. This time, we’re going back to the past with a new story set in the year 1719 with Amber Midthunder winding up in the Predator’s sights in the Comanche Nation. You can watch the new trailer below.
Prey is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison. It stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Danie DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, and Julian Black Antelope. Serving as a prequel to the prior films, Prey will be released on Hulu on Aug. 5, and you can read the official synopsis for the film below.
“Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”
Amber Midthunder Brings Native American Representation to Prey
After her casting was announced, Native American actress Amber Midthunder spoke about how proud she was about the film. With an Instagram post, Midthunder mentioned how the move was a step forward for representation in mainstream movies.
“I’m beyond words feeling proud, humbled, and excited to finally be able to share this news and have been given this opportunity,” Midthunder said. “It is time we see ourselves represented fully in mainstream entertainment. As strong and human, by our own people. I can’t wait for you all to see what we made this summer. Ʉra ako & pilamaye.”
Producer John Davis has also greatly hyped the film, feeling confident that fans will appreciate it just as much as the original. The idea is that Prey goes back to the Predator franchise’s roots, comparing Midthunder’s Naru to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch.
“It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work,” Davis told Collider. “It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force. It’s going to be, I believe, the second best — or the first… or it may be equal to the first one. Right? I feel like the first one was a wonderful, interesting movie and I know what worked about it.”
The producer notes that the other sequels didn’t quite capture that same vibe of the original, hinting that Prey was able to crack that code. He added, “I feel like we kind of never got back there again. We ended up in different places. I think this is a worthy complement to the first one. It’s going to be as good.”
Prey is set to start streaming on Hulu on Aug. 5, 2022.
