MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Armed only with a bow and an ensemble of animal skins, Martin sets off into the forest in a misguided attempt to overcome his midlife crisis. A chance meeting with a fugitive named Musa leads to a twisted trip through the fjords with police, drug runners, and Martin’s family not far behind. As an unlikely friendship develops and wildly original set-pieces unfold, Martin’s quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal.”

Wild Men Tells the Story of an Extreme Midlife Crisis

It is not uncommon for someone to have a midlife crisis, but people can handle them very differently. Not everyone will think to venture into the wilderness to live as their ancestors had as a way to cope. For co-writer/director Thomas Daneskov, making a film about a midlife crisis was how the idea for Wild Men began, as he found it interesting to explore why men cope the way they do.

“I have always been fascinated about why men are so bad at coping when things get bad. Like, why do we suck at that?” Daneskov said of the film, per Nordic Watchlist. “So, that has been a theme in my films for some time and I did a lot of research with the producer on another project where the characters had the same names as Wild Men but instead of him heading out to the mountains he went to a summer camp, and he had drunk a lot, listened to a lot of records, and didn’t wear his pants.”

Getting the right idea locked down took some time, however. After googling “midlife crisis” for a year and continuing to stall with the story, Daneskov observed a commercial asking him to “spend a summer vacation as a Viking.” Suggesting trying this out with his girlfriend, which would have included using bow and arrows and sleeping under furs, the idea elicited a negative reaction. But it did give Daneskov the idea he was looking for.

“I shared the commercial at work, and then we decided to redo the script, and we just couldn’t stop laughing at the new concept. The opening scene in the film came to us within 5 minutes,” the filmmaker explained.

Wild Men will be released in U.S. theaters on June 17 with a VOD release to follow this summer.
