Sony has just announced its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 IV. When it comes to the overall design, this phone does resemble its predecessors. It even picked up the flat sides from the Xperia 1 III.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV resembles its predecessor quite a bit

The vast majority of people probably wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between the two phones. Even the camera placement on the back is the same, and that goes for the camera sensors inside the camera island as well.

Sony once again decided not to utilize a display notch or hole. Instead, there are somewhat thin bezels above and below the display. They’re thicker than the bezels on most flagships, but certainly not thick. Many would say this is a good call, so that they don’t have to get the annoyance that is a display camera hole.

It has a side-facing fingerprint scanner, and an audio jack

All the physical buttons are located on the right-hand side. The power/lock button doubles as a fingerprint scanner, while the volume up and down buttons are placed above it. A physical camera shutter button is also placed on the right side.

The phone’s rear cameras are vertically-aligned, and they’re placed in the top-left corner. ZEISS’ T* coating is applied here, as is on Vivo’s flagships. This is here to battle light flares and reflections.

Many of you are probably wondering if Sony removed the audio jack, and the answer is no. A 3.5mm headphone jack sits at the top of the phone, as expected. This is one of the very few flagships that offer this feature.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is included, along with a 4K 120Hz display

Now, when it comes to specs, this is a powerful device, of course. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 fuels the Xperia 1 IV, while the phone features a 6.5-inch display. That is a flat 4K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is up to 50-percent brighter than the one on the Xperia 1 III. We’re looking at a 21:9 aspect ratio here, as we’re used to when it comes to Sony phones.

The device includes 12GB of RAM and 512GB of flash storage (expandable). A 5,000mAh battery sits on the inside, while the phone supports both wired and wireless charging. Speeds are unknown, but Sony says you can get this phone up to 50% in only 30 minutes.

Android 12 comes pre-installed on the Xperia 1 IV, while the device does feature full stereo speakers (two of them). Bluetooth 5.2 is included, and so is an NFC chip. The phone does support 5G connectivity, of course. The device is IP65/IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.

The Xperia 1 IV comes with four 12-megapixel cameras

The device has three 12-megapixel cameras on the back. The main 12-megapixel camera has an 82-degree FoV, and a 24mm lens with an f/1.7 aperture. This is an Exmor RS mobile sensor. The second camera is a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (f/2.2 aperture, 124-degree FoV, 16mm lens, Exmor RS), while the third one is a 12-megapixel telephoto unit (f/2.3-f/2.8 aperture, 28-20-degree FoV, 85-125mm focal length, Exmor RS).

All three of those cameras offer 120 FPS read-out speeds. On top of that, they offer real-time eye autofous, and 20 FPS burst shooting with HDR. 60 FPS continuous autofocus and auto-exposure calculations are also a part of the package, as is 4K 120 FPS video recording.

A single 12-megapixel camera (f/2.0 aperture, 83-degree FoV) camera sits on the front side of the device. The Sony Xperia 1 IV measures 165.1 x 71.1 x 7.6mm, while it weighs 187 grams. The phone comes in Black and Violet color variants, and its pricing starts at $1,599. The Xperia 1 IV will start shipping in the US September. Europe will get the device sooner, as it will start shipping next month.
