The first official trailer for David Cronenberg’s upcoming sci-fi body horror feature Crimes of the Future has arrived, and it is absolutely horrifying. The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles. Crimes of the Future marks Cronenberg’s return to the horror genre after two decades, and it seems the visionary filmmaker is trying to make up for lost time with one extremely visceral and grotesque body horror film. You can check out the trailer for Crimes of the Future below.
The plot synopsis for Crimes of the Future accompanying the trailer reads:
“As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.”
The cryptic synopsis doesn’t give much away but inferring from the trailer and Cronenberg’s interviews, Crimes of the Future is set in a futuristic society that doesn’t feel pain. A forbidden pleasure, pain is explored through surgery and self-mutilation by performance artists. “Surgery is the new sex,” Stewart’s character tells Mortenson in the trailer. Cronenberg’s distinctive visual style is on full display in the trailer, but there is one particular shot that stands out. It features a man with his eyes and mouth sewed shut and ears grafted on his head. And he is also dancing naked on top of that.
Unsurprisingly, Crimes of the Future has been rated R for “strong disturbing violent content and grisly images, graphic nudity, and some language.” The film also stars Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos.
Crimes of the Future will premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival later this month before hitting theaters on June 10, 2022.
David Cronenberg Is Heading Back To His Horror Roots With Crimes Of The Future
Best known for directing iconic horror films like Scanner, The Fly, and Dead Ringers, David Cronenberg has been showcasing his filmmaking talents with more dramatic films in recent years like A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and Cosmopolis. But Cronenberg is ready to return to the genre that established him in the industry and promises that Crimes of the Future is every bit as disturbing (and even connected to) his earlier works. In a statement (via Bloody Disgusting), Cronenberg said:
“Crimes of the Future is a meditation on human evolution… the ways in which we have had to take control of the process because we have created such powerful environments that did not exist previously. [It’s] an evolution of things I have done before. Fans will see key references to other scenes and moments from my other films. That’s a continuity of my understanding of technology as connected to the human body. Technology is always an extension of the human body, even when it seems to be very mechanical and non-human.”
Pain may be a pleasure for the characters in Crimes of the Future, but the audience certainly won’t be enjoying the graphic depictions of violence and sex. Several viewers fainted or walked out at a recent L.A. screening of the film. It remains to be seen how the Cannes audience reacts to Crimes of the Future.
