Technology keeps changing rapidly and tech biggies are always on the lookout to develop innovative solutions that attract more people. Wearables have become a hot area for innovation lately. Smartwatches and TWS (true wireless) earbuds are the two most popular wearable categories, with smart glasses also gradually following suit. Smart contact lenses that we see in science fiction movies could soon become a reality too. According to research and analysis firm Global Market Vision (via), this futuristic technology is nearing its real-world debut and will explode over the next five to seven years.

This is quite an optimistic outlook as the smart contact lenses have hardly made it beyond concepts so far. Even smart glasses haven’t picked up much traction yet despite a few years of existence. People haven’t understood what smart glasses are useful for.

However, the research firm sees several tech biggies actively working on smart contact lens technologies. Perhaps it sees high consumer demand for smart contact lenses in the market too. Maybe the firm is expecting people to adopt the tiny eye wearables at the same rate as smartwatches. The latter category also didn’t take too long to boom. That’s because of the usability of these wrist wearables. Today, smartwatches not only substitute for a smartphone in several scenarios but also act as a personal diagnostic clinic.

Smart contact lenses also have the potential to act as a diagnostic tool for the eyes. But not everyone may prefer to wear those tiny tech pieces due to inconvenience concerns. This means the usage scenario for smart contact lenses isn’t as wide as smartwatches. Improvements in smart glass technology might be what the world needs before smart contact lenses. Time will tell how these futuristic technologies evolve over the next few years.

Samsung could be one of the first brands to launch smart contact lenses

Market analysts believe Samsung, Sony, and Google will lead this technological revolution of smart contact lenses. Some lesser-known brands such as Sensimed AG and PEGL are working on it too. It will be interesting to see who comes out with a viable product first.

Samsung already has a patent on smart contact lenses dating back to 2016. The Korean company, which is also one of the biggest makers of smartwatches, has the expertise to make these eye wearables. But it might still be too early to say for sure. We expect to hear more on this development in the future. We will keep you posted.
