Alexander Skarsgård shows no mercy in the latest, heart-pounding trailer for director Robert Eggers’ The Northman. A Viking epic the likes of which has not graced the silver screen in some time, the newly released trailer comes courtesy of Focus Features, and once again teases the brutal and bloody revenge carried out by Alexander Skarsgård’s wronged warrior prince.
The Northman will hurl audiences into the cold and the grey, picking up at the turn of the 10th century in Iceland. Based on a medieval Scandanavian legend, the story centers on a Viking named Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), who witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandil, at the hands of his uncle, Fjolnir. With his mother, Queen Gudrun, now captured, Amleth flees his native land, but not before declaring his revenge on those who have wronged him. Make no mistake, they will regret it. Returning to claim his kingdom years later, the now hulking Amleth will demonstrate his ferocity and penchant for violence.
The Northman is based on a simple premise as uttered by Amleth himself, Avenge father. Save mother. Kill Fjölnir. With its abundance of swords, blood, and vengeance, The Northman has quickly been likened to the likes of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator…only even more nightmarish.
Starring alongside Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, The Northman features an impressive supporting cast that includes, Nicole Kidman as Queen Gudrún, Amleth’s mother; Claes Bang as Fjölnir, Amleth’s uncle and Aurvandill’s brother; Anya Taylor-Joy as Olga; Björk as a witch known as the Seeress; Willem Dafoe as Heimir the Fool; Kate Dickie as Halldora the Pict; Gustav Lindh as Thorir the Proud; and finally, Ethan Hawke as King Aurvandill, Amleth’s father and Fjölnir’s brother.
The Northman is Led by a Transformative Performance From Alexander Skarsgård
Early reactions to The Northman have been hugely positive so far, with critics praising both the direction and vision of Robert Eggers and the powerful central performance from Alexander Skarsgård. “I’ve been a huge fan of Robert Eggers for years, but THE NORTHMAN is truly his masterpiece. Brutal, fearless, & audacious, it feels like the kind of cinematic epic we don’t see very often anymore. It’s a ferocious & stunning work of art & Alexander Skarsgard rules,” said one review.
Another compared The Northman to Gladiator saying, “The Northman: Robert Eggers has made his Gladiator. A satisfying, emotional revenge epic that kept me guessing and engaged with its beautiful language, mythology, and cinematography. Smaller than the trailers make it seem but still powerful and moving.” while another described Alexander Skarsgård as transforming into an “animal” as her mercilessly enacts his revenge on his enemies; “The Northman is vicious and unforgivingly good. It’s a pretty astonishing achievement. Alexander Skarsgard is insane for that performance. The man turns into an animal. Robert Eggers delivers violent, gripping, and unforgettable levels of immersion. Really well done.”
Thankfully, we do not have to wait too long to bask in the glory of The Northman, with the movie scheduled to be released in the United States on April 22, 2022, by Focus Features.
