In December 2021, Makoto Shinkai released a teaser image for his upcoming film, Suzume no Tojimari, featuring a mysterious door. Now, the official TOHO Movie Youtube channel has opened the door, but just by a crack, in the form of a teaser trailer. That trailer can be viewed below.
Shinkai rocked the world in 2016 when his film, Your Name, hit theaters and captured audiences worldwide. The film earned over $380 million and was an absolute smash hit with critics and viewers alike. He followed that film up with Weathering With You, another huge success, earning almost $200 at the box office. CoMix Wave Films, the studio behind the previous two movies, gives a synopsis for Suzume no Tojimari, which can be read below.
On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety—17-year-old Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly mesmerized by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob…Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster. The starsThe sunsetThe morning skyWithin that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky—Drawn in by this mysterious door, Suzume’s journey is about to begin.
Doors Unopened and Doors Crossed
When Shinkai announced the film back in December, he described three important points about the film. The first point was that it was a road trip movie around Japan, the second point being that it’s a story about “closing doors,” and the third point being that it’s a reason to visit the movie theater. Judging by the teaser and the synopsis, those three points seem to hold up to his description.
With mysterious doors opening all around Japan, our main characters are probably going to be jumping in and out of doors to all the various locations that the country has to offer, from its sprawling cities to its quiet countryside. As for the “closing doors,” Shinkai described the phrase meaning “to finish something” or “tying up loose ends,” perhaps this is going to be the theme of the movie. And finally, with animation as gorgeous as what we see in this teaser, the idea of watching it on a big screen sounds like an enticing idea.
Shinkai will be writing and directing Suzume no Tojimari. Masayoshi Tanaka, who worked on Your Name and Weathering With You, is credited with character designing. Kenichi Tsuchiya (Garden of Words) is credited as animation director. Takumi Tanji (Children Who Chase Lost Voices) is credited as art director. Along with CoMix Wave Films, Story Inc. will also be producing the film, with Toho distributing. Suzume To Tojimari is coming to Japanese theaters November of this year.
