Yes, it’s all men, and all the men are Rory Kinnear, in the latest trailer for A24 and writer/director Alex Garland’s upcoming horror flick, Men. Courtesy of the A24 official YouTube channel, the celebrated studio has unveiled the full trailer for Ex Machina and Annihilation director Alex Garland‘s latest foray into the world of horror, with the eerie footage being accompanied by a monstrously creepy poster.
The official plot synopsis for Men reads as follows; “In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s shape-shifting new horror film.”
What begins as the story of a traumatized woman, played by Oscar nominee and The Lost Daughter star Jessie Buckley, attempting to find peace in solitude, and her dealings with a quirky, awkward man, slowly transforms into something far more terrifying. Men has been a project drenched in mystery ever since it was announced, and somehow the trailer leaves us asking even more questions, as Rory Kinnear (No Time to Die, Black Mirror) plays every other character in the movie apart from the lead. From the odd landlord, to the rude vicar, to the local police officer, there is certainly no shortage of Rory Kinnear in Men.
Men is that wonderful minimalist example of movie-making and only features three actors, with Jessie Buckley starring as Harper, while Rory Kinnear seemingly plays everyone else. As shown in the footage, Paapa Essiedu will also feature in brief, haunting flashbacks.
Men is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 20.
Men is just the latest ominous treat from writer/director Alex Garland, whose career took off after writing such seminal big-screen outings as 28 Days Later and Sunshine for director Danny Boyle. Garland went on to demonstrate his ability as an auteur with 2014’s masterful science fiction movie, Ex Machina, which follows Domhnall Gleeson as a lowly programmer, who is given the chance to become a part of a strange scientific experiment in which he is expected to assess artificial intelligence by interacting with a female robot, played by Alicia Vikander.
Garland, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his work on Ex Machina, followed this up with the equally eerie, and equally superb Annihilation starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac. Once again transporting audiences into a spectral world of science fiction, Annihilation tells the story of cellular biology professor and Army veteran Lena, who recounts her expedition to a mysterious zone known as the “Shimmer”.
Following the release of Men, Alex Garland clearly has no intention of slowing down. The writer/director has already set up his next project, reuniting with A24 action movie set in a “near-future America” titled Civil War and starring The Power of the Dog’s Kirsten Dunst.
