The Microsoft Surface Duo was quite a unique phone. While we all know it as an Android-based phone, an engineering student saw other possibilities in it. Gustave Monce was able to put Window 11 into the Surface Duo.

People porting different software onto devices is nothing new, but it never gets old. It becomes more impressive when a person ports a full computer operating system on a device that’s supposed to run a mobile platform. For example, a user was actually able to get Windows 11 to run on a Pixel 6.

Monce installed Windows 11 into a Surface Duo

The Microsoft Surface Duo launched back in 2020 with Android 10 and it recently got the update to Android 11. It launched a year before Windows 11 launched, so it’s impressive that someone was able to merge the two.

Gustave Monce made a lengthy Twitter post showcasing Windows 11 on his Surface Duo. It included both videos and pictures. So far, he was able to get the software to run only on one of the screens. The other screen remained off, and this makes sense.

Using the device in portrait mode formats the screen accordingly and it looks like you’re using a Windows 11-powered tablet. What’s neat is that you can turn it to landscape mode and the software will change orientation.

You can install this yourself

If you’re interested in trying this out yourself, it’s available to download. In his tweet, he includes a link to get all of the necessary assets to make this work. There’s a link to the Github as well as a link to download the drivers needed.

Suffice to say, you shouldn’t do this if you’re not tech-savvy. Doing this, you run the risk of ruining your phone or voiding the warranty. Not only that, but this is a really early project. When you load the software on your device, you won’t be able to use the touch controls or your data. If you’re brave enough and nerdy enough, you can go to the Github and try it out for yourself.
