Season 3 might be a ways off, but Disney Plus is delivering a new bit of The Mandalorian entertainment for fans all the same next month. The studio announced this Tuesday that a special episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, titled Making the Season 2 Finale, is coming to streaming in August. It’ll do just what it says on the label and dive behind the scenes of the explosive last episode of season 2 which blew fans’ minds last December.
Famously, the finale ended with the genuinely shocking return of Luke Skywalker, with the legendary Jedi recreated in his prime thanks to the involvement of Mark Hamill, stunt doubles and some state-of-the-art CGI. The press release for this Disney Gallery special promises that it will reveal an eye-opening look at the painstaking process that restored a young, Return of the Jedi era, Luke. Here’s how it goes:
“Making of the Season 2 Finale” is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this celebrated ‘chapter’ of The Mandalorian, with a focus on the technology used for recreating Luke Skywalker. It delves into the collaborative process, including working with Mark Hamill, to create an authentic and fitting recreation, and explores the immense pressure and responsibility the filmmakers had in bringing back one of the most important characters in film history.”
This news comes on the same day that the Television Academy has nominated The Mandalorian season 2 for a whopping 24 Emmy Awards, including for the coveted category of Outstanding Drama Series.
Eight episodes of Disney Gallery followed season 1 in spring 2020, but season 2 only received a single making-of special when it wrapped up last Christmas, which meant fans didn’t get to find out as much about how that run came together. A follow-up special focusing on the finale is exactly what we needed, then, especially as season 3 won’t be here for a while. Though at least limited spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett is debuting this December.
Luke’s arrival was not just a huge technical achievement – it changed the whole status quo of the show too, as Master Skywalker took Baby Grogu with him to be trained up, leaving Din Djarin heartbroken. We’ll have to keep waiting to find out how the story continues, but Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian – Making of Season 2 Finale drops August 25th on Disney Plus.
