Mel Gibson is returning to his action movie comfort zone in the new movie Agent Game, and the first trailer sees a tense and explosion-filled scenario that is going to please fans of both the actor and the genre. Gibson is joined in the movie by Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs, Dermot Mulroney, Adan Canto, Katie Cassidy, and Annie Ilonzeh, with Nighthawks helmer Grant S. Johnson directing. Based on the trailer this will be another action blockbuster for Gibson to add to his roster.

Agent Game is an old school action thriller that Gibson was once known for churning out effortlessly such as Payback. While Gibson has not been quite as prolific in recent years, he has been staging something of a comeback with movies such as Fatman, Boss Level, Last Looks, and with much talk about a return of the Lethal Weapon franchise once again doing the rounds and a role in the John Wick spin-off The Continental. He is also set to star in three upcoming movies, Panama, Stu and Bandit all of which are either filming or in post-production.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Agent Game was first announced in March last year with filming taking place between March and April 2021 in and around Augusta, Georgia. While the movie was filmed before the tragic events on the set of Alec Baldwin’s movie Rust, the use of firearms and explosives in the movie saw letters being sent to local residents warning them that the film shoot would be incorporating the use of prop guns. You can see some of those shots in the trailer below.

Mel Gibson has a long string of action movies to his names, from Lethal Weapon to his appearance in The Expendables series with other action gods such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and more. However, he is not alone in Agent Game, as his co-stars also have their own credentials when it comes to playing in the genre.

Jason Isaac appeared with Gibson in Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot two decades ago, and has also appeared in films such as Black Hawk Down, Green Zone and Jackie Chan’s The Tuxedo as well as having a major role in the Harry Potter franchise. Katie Cassidy has most recently been seen as Black Canary in DC’s Arrow, while Dermot Mulroney appeared in the TV series Hanna. While there doesn’t seem a huge amount of love for low-key movies as much as big superhero and franchise sequels at the moment, it is likely that Agent Game will find a good home on a streaming platform when it is released in theaters and on-demand from April 8th.

The official synopsis for the movie reads, “In this riveting spy thriller, no one is safe. Harris (Dermot Mulroney), a CIA interrogator at an Agency black site, finds himself the target of a rendition operation after being scapegoated for an interrogation gone horribly wrong. As the team tasked to bring Harris in begins to question their orders — and each other —Olsen (Mel Gibson), a senior intelligence officer, and his subordinate, Visser (Annie Ilonzeh), raise the stakes. Now, it’s up to Harris and some newfound allies to uncover the truth and turn the tables.”
