Auto-generated captions on YouTube videos are super helpful in loud situations, and it’s a feature that every platform should have. TikTok adopted this feature, and now, it’s made it to Instagram. According to an announcement from Adam Mosseri, Instagram is finally getting its own auto-generated captions.

Instagram is getting auto-generated captions

Social media videos tend to be loud (especially TikToks and Instagram Reels), but they can’t compete against a loud coffee shop or house party. This is why captions on videos are super handy. On the other side of that coin, they can come in useful when the environment is too quiet, and you need to mute your phone.

YouTube added this feature a long time ago, and TikTok followed that. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, posted a tweet saying that it finally added its own version of auto-generated captions. When you’re watching a video, you’ll have the ability to toggle them on or off.

He posted the tweet with some pictures showing how this feature works. A video has its options brought up and under the Copy Link and Share To options sits the Manage Captions options. Tapping on it brings up a simple switch the feature on and off.

The captions prove useful in several ways

People use captions to watch muted videos in quiet places and loud environments, but there are other reasons. Mosseri, in his tweet, said that auto-generated captions on Instagram help those who are deaf and head-of-hearing. That makes a lot of sense because Instagram videos shouldn’t only be for those with good hearing.

Also, people don’t always speak clearly in their videos, so auto-generated captions can help in that regard. Nowadays, people need to talk quickly so their videos can avoid being scrolled by. This leads to people blasting through their words at lightning speed. Auto-generated captions help people who struggle to keep up with the speaker.

This feature will launch soon, but it will only launch in select languages. Mosseri didn’t state which languages, but English-speaking folks can expect English to launch first. He didn’t state the launch date, so users just need to wait for the release.

The captions won’t be perfect out of the gate

YouTube has a TON of data and AI training to analyze the words, but Instagram doesn’t. Instagram says that its AI will get better over time as it learns. The captions won’t be perfect out of the box, but they will get better over time.
