Who wouldn’t want a personal robot to go and grab you a cold one? According to The Verge, Amazon’s long-awaited Astro robot has finally been spotted in the wild, and people are posting pictures and videos of it.

Amazon’s Astro robot shows up in videos and pictures

If you thought LG’s ClOi service robot was handy, how about one that can grab you a soda? We knew about Amazon’s Astro robot for a while. Last November, the company sent some units out to early testers. There could have been an embargo period because we’re all now getting photos and videos of this robot in action. This all gives us a good look at what this little robot can do; from the looks of it, this little robot can do A LOT.

This robot is really impressive!

Amazon’s Astro robots are meant to be personal assistants to help you monitor your house. The thinking behind them is that they’re an extra set of eyes. Astro will monitor your house when you’re away and keep an eye out when you’re home. It has a bevy of different sensors to help keep track of who’s home and where it is. In the videos, we see the robots constantly emitting light to detect their surroundings.

If the robot detects unauthorized people in your house, it will notify you on your connected device. And yes, these robots can ACTUALLY recognize people. In one video, the owner told the robot to find Celeste. the Astro did. It was able to recognize the person and greet her with an on-screen message.

In the same video, the owner told the Astro to go to the den, and it did. The onboard sensors and AI are really insanely advanced. Admittedly, it’s a technology that will take just a bit of refining. It takes the Astro a couple of seconds to understand the commands.

Overall, these seem like really handy and powerful robots that could keep an eye on the house. As an added bonus, these robots use Alexa to handle the commands, so you know there’s powerful AI behind them. Now, there are services that will cost extra money and subscription fees, however. You’ll have to look out for that.

They’re going to be hard to get

If you’re interested in buying one of these robots, it might be a little bit of a hassle. Right now, there’s a limited quantity available, so you’ll have to request an invitation to buy one. Even then, not all requests will be accepted. If you manage to get an invitation, you can get one for the introductory price of $999. After that price expires, the price will jump to $1,449.99.
