Sometimes, we’re tagged in threads that we just don’t want to be a part of. While there are ways that we can mute the conversations, Twitter might be working on a way for us to leave them altogether. A new Tweet by writer and researcher Machun Wong gives us insight into how this feature will be helpful.

Twitter could be working on a Leave This Conversation feature

This happens sometimes: your notifications are FLOODED with replies to a thread you didn’t even make. Someone tagged you, and now you’re audience to all of the drama going on within it. Because of this, Twitter could be working on a feature that’ll allow you to leave that conversation, completely.

Thanks to a screenshot from Wong, we see what looks like a “Leave This Conversation” feature. In the screenshot, there’s a popup window that outlines what this feature will do, giving the user the option to choose it or decline it.

The Leave This Conversation feature will untag you from the conversation. Your username will still be there, but it won’t link back to your profile. Also, you’ll stop receiving notifications from the conversation, but you will still have access to it. Last, but not least, it will stop future mentions. This means that people won’t be able to tag you again in the conversation.

What’s neat about this feature is that it lets you quietly slip away from the conversation. When you leave the conversation, no one will be notified at all.

This would be a great feature

There are a lot of popular people on social media platforms, and they get tagged a lot. On Twitter, that problem can run rampant because of the free nature of the platform. Users can follow and then tag their favorite content creators or celebrities at their leisure (well, until they’re blocked). This means that the influencer can get absolutely bombarded with unwanted notifications, which is not fun. Being able to cut themselves out of conversations should sound like a gift.

We’re not sure when this feature will come out

Right now, we don’t know when or if this feature will come out. The tweet shows us a screenshot of the feature, but that’s all. Twitter neither confirmed nor denied that it’s working on this feature when asked by The Verge. It’s all up in the air, so we’ll have to wait and see if this will actually be a thing. Until then, people still have the option to mute conversations, so that’s a good thing.
