The Pixel 6 phones have been getting the usual updates since they launched back in October. Just a week after the recent February security patch, Google seems to be sending another OTA, and we don’t quite know what for. This new and unexpected update was only launched for the Pixel 6 phones.

We don’t know why Google launched these unexpected updates

On the Google site, you have the option to download this to your phone if you have a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro. We know it’s a new version of the software because of the version number SQ1D.220205.004. The only difference from the previous version is in the final three digits (it’s .004 rather than .003).

Google didn’t tell anyone any information on why it launched this update out of the blue. It didn’t give us any patch notes on this unexpected update, so we’re all confused.

There’s one theory

Android 12 has been plagued with several issues. The latest February security update introduced another software bug to the Pixel 6 phones. People started reporting that the February security patch broke their Wi-Fi capabilities. This issue affected several Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users, and no one was able to solve it.

Basically, when people tried to use the Wi-Fi quick settings toggle, nothing would happen. The toggle would switch to “On”, but the Wi-Fi itself wouldn’t actually turn on. When people would go to the actual settings and turn on the Wi-Fi, they would return to find that it’s been cut off.

This unexpected update to the Pixel 6 phones might be a fix for that issue. Not being able to access Wi-Fi is a pretty frustrating bug, so it makes sense for Google to go and send out an update at its earliest convenience. You can download the OTA right now, and try it out for yourselves.

In Other Pixel 6 News: The calibration tool for the Pixel 6’s fingerprint scanner needs work.

Third parties can repair Pixel 6 fingerprint scanners, and they receive a software tool kit to help them calibrate the sensors. Unfortunately, it seems that the actual program can use some repair of its own.

In order to be used, the tool kit needs to download software, install it and restart the phone. However, when the application tries to download the software, it fails. The app says that the software can not be found. Google hasn’t commented on this just yet. Hopefully, the company can find a way to fix this.
