The Last of Us is one of PlayStation’s most popular franchises, and it’s the perfect setup for a TV series. We’ve known that an HBO series was in the works for a while, but no definite release date was given. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we know that the Last of Us Show won’t release this year.
The Last of Us show won’t release this year
When you think of important PlayStation franchises, a shortlist of properties comes to mind. On that list is the Last of Us series of games. It debuted back in 2013 and it’s been popular ever since, being ported to the PS4. There was even word that a version was coming to the PS5. So, it makes sense that HBO would be interested in developing shows based on it.
Since the original announcement of the show, we’ve been wanting to know just when it was going to premiere. Now, we got word from multiple sources that the Last of Us show won’t release any time this year. Casey Bloys, HBO’s chief content officer said in a statement that the team is filming in Canada at the moment and we shouldn’t expect to see this show this year at all. “[It’s] not going to air in 2022 — they are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in ’23”, Bloys told Deadline.
This means that the show is still in the very early stages of development and that the team itself doesn’t know when the show will launch. Bloys said that he imagines in 2023, even that doesn’t seem solid. Long story short, don’t expect the show any time this year.
What is the Last of Us?
If you don’t know what The Last of Us is, don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to get familiar with it before the show premiers. The story follows a man named Joel during an outbreak of a mutant fungus. This mutant fungus turns people into mindless and violent pseudo-human monsters. If this sounds familiar, think of just about EVERY zombie movie you’ve seen. The game starts out with a long scene that ends in Joel tragically losing his daughter.
20 years after that incident, Joel meets a young girl named Ellie, and she becomes his main partner throughout the first and second games. He needs to deliver her to a certain location without being detected. The thing about Ellie is that she’s, somehow, immune to the fungus that’s infecting people, so she’s precious cargo.
